Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries commemorates World Food Day, 16 Oct

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) declared October as Food Security Month to heighten public awareness on issues pertaining to food security in the country and also strengthening solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

As part of the Food Security Month activities, DAFF, in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, the Mbizana Local Municipality and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), will commemorate World Food Day on 16 October 2015 with the Mbongweni community in the Mbizana Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

World Food Day is celebrated annually around the world on 16 October, in honour of the founding date of the FAO of the United Nations. The main objective of World Food Day is to create awareness on issues of global food insecurity. The theme for this year is: Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty.

The Minister, Hon. Senzeni Zokwana, the Deputy Minister, General Bheki Cele and the provincial leadership and local leadership will unveil a food mountain and participate in a march symbolic of alliance against hunger. The food mountain will be made of food donated by DAFF staff members, corporates and South African citizens. The food will be donated to identified households in Mbongweni.
