The Free State Department of Health will be commemorating Women’s Month under the national theme “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment”. The planned event is organised by the women of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) of the Free State Department of Health. The event resonates with the call of the national theme which is looking at honouring the extraordinary and often unrecognised determination and tenacity of women.
Whilst the focus of the women’s month is the development and empowerment of women, the MEC for Health Dr Benny Malakoane will support this event by handing over 13 vehicles to the Mangaung Metro at 10h00 am at Botshabelo Hospital. Of these vehicles ten are Ambulances, one response rescue vehicle and two commuter vehicles. The MEC will then proceed to join the women’s month activity in the community hall in H Section.
The MEC for Social Development Mrs Sisi Ntombela will also be part of these events on her capacity as MEC and Chairperson of the African National Congress Women’s League in the Free State province.
As part of the event, forty (41) families who are in dire need for general support due to poverty were identified by women of EMS whilst on duty call. The EMS women would like to empower those families by donating clothes and giving moral support in line with the main objectives of a service delivery improvement programme. The event will take place in Botshabelo Community Hall on the 2 August 2014. Women from SAPS, Traffic, Botshabelo Local Municipality, Health Services and Social Development departments will also take part in this event.
Other focus areas of the event will include looking into many challenges which are facing women such as HIV and AIDS, Maternal and Child Mortality, Poverty, Gender relations, Globalisation, Violence, Access to basic needs, Access to employment ,Women empowerment, Access to land, science and technology.
Woman have demonstrated their character, courage and commitment as mothers, educators, institution builders, business, labor, political and community leaders, relief workers, women religious, and CEOs. Their lives and their work inspire girls and women to achieve their full potential and encourage boys and men to respect the diversity and depth of women’s experience.
More than two thousand (2 000) people are expected to attend the women’s month event. The department is committed to woman empowerment and it is important for society to promote and protect the rights of woman and children, especially those in the rural areas.
