Golf tournament supports healthier environments in children's wards

A fund raising golf tournament to raise funds to meet the immediate needs of the children in the paediatric ward at the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital will be hosted by the Thandi Ruth Modise Health Development Trust at the Leopard Park Golf Course in Mahikeng on Friday.

North West Premier, Mme Thandi Modise will tee-off the tournament at 10h30 am and later in the evening deliver the keynote address at the gala prize giving dinner she will be hosting at the Mmabatho Palms Hotel  as from 6h30.

The challenge is supported by corporate companies that support the Premier’s vision to alleviate harsh conditions at paediatric wards across the province and country. Immediate needs identified at the ward are pyjamas for the ages 2 to 12, Bed linen, Educational Toys, Visitors’ chairs, Water Tanks, Heaters, Air Conditioners, Television, Burglar-proofing and Curtains, etc.

The depressing conditions under which children from ages of one to twelve years lived while admitted at the hospital moved North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise to adopt the ward after experiencing first hand their plight when she volunteered 67 minutes of her time to do community service at the ward during the July 2011 Mandela Week.

The Trust was established in terms of the Trust Property Control Act 57 of 1988 as a charitable organisation with a sole object of carrying on within the Republic of South Africa for the purposes of a public benefit activity of assisting in the creation of health facilities as well as the general advancement of the health sector.

A board of trustee was appointed by Premier Modise to oversee the affairs of the trust. Since the hospital also serves as a referral hospital for all clinics in the province and in light of the growing population at the hospital, part of Ms Modise’s long-term vision is to establish an entirely new children’s wing.

“With sole reliance on the budget allocations of the Provincial Department of Health, it will not be possible for us to within a short period revamp children’s wards into conducive environments that stimulates our young ones to recuperate to good health hence the trust deemed it necessary to solicit the financial assistance of the business community and some individuals to fund the project.

Corporate Social Investments that support the cause of alleviating hardships faced by our young children with health challenges should make day a Mandela Day,” says Premier Modise.

Members of the media are invited to cover the tee-off and the gala prize giving dinner.
