Gender, Poverty and Energy Dialogue: The link between gender, poverty and energy and its negative impact

On 16 March 2011, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) will host a dialogue titled: “progress made to address gendered energy challenges and its impact”. The event will take place at Roodepoort Country Club.

In accordance with the powers outlined in the CGE Act, the CGE will draw a sample of institutions such as National Energy Regulator of South Africa's (NERSA), Eskom, Department of Local Government Department of Minerals and Energy, Women in Mining and Energy, South African Local Government Association (Salga), Gender and Energy Network South Africa.

We endeavour to create a platform wherein challenges are addressed with the intention of seeking strategies that would somewhat address such challenges in a more holistic gendered manner.

Objectives of the dialogue

  • To create a platform to discuss and debate broad challenges faced in accessing energy within the gendered context.
  • To consider the true cost of fossil fuel based energy, for instance through looking at acid mine drainage
  • To evaluate and discuss the Integrated Resource Plan II developed to deal with energy provision in a gendered context.
  • To monitor the progress made in dealing with energy challenges in the gendered context

A media statement will be issued at the end of day to sensitise the public through the media on emerging issues. The CGE will seek further engagement with the media to publicise findings and recommendations from the dialogue going forward.
