Gender Equality celebrates International Rural Women's Day, 15 Oct

On 15 October 2014 the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) In Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State and Limpopo Province will be celebrating the International Rural Women’s Day by visiting various projects run by women.

This is part of the CGE’s mandate of monitoring and evaluating projects that are geared towards capacity building and empowerment of women, with a focus on women in the agricultural sector. The Commission is of the view that the participation of rural women and women with disabilities, through their organisations and networks, in the design, development and implementation of rural development programmes and strategies will help contribute towards sustainable development and gender equality in line with the theme: “Women and Food Security”.

The Commission recognises the critical role and contribution of rural women in enhancing agricultural development, improving food security and eradicating poverty.  In some provinces the Commission shall address health needs of rural women such as sexual and reproductive health, family planning, awareness and support for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases including HIV and AIDS.

“We believe the invited stakeholders will exchange information and share their experiences in working with rural women. This will assist the Commission in its work to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women as an effective strategy to combat poverty, hunger and diseases,” said the Chairperson of the CGE, Mfanozelwe Shozi.
