The Gauteng Department of Education in partnership with Soul City Institute (SCI) hosts the 6th Annual Soul Buddyz Club National Congress from 8 to 12 December 2011 at Konka in Magaliesburg.
The National Congress aims to provide a platform for club members, facilitators and key stakeholders to network with each other, share experiences and to engage in an array of skills building sessions. It also aims to create an opportunity for Soul City to engage with our target audience (learners) and to monitor and evaluate progress on the ground as well as get feedback from clubs in order to inform and improve future activities and strategy.
To date we have hosted four successful Annual National Congresses. Each event was attended by more than 450 learners and educators, representing clubs from all provinces. The three-day programme includes a range of skills building workshops, sessions for monitoring and evaluating club activities and facilitating networking between club members and educators.
Each year we make the experience different and extra special for all invited clubs. For the first time ever, the National Congress will be hosted in Gauteng. Some of the Buddyz will get to experience air travel for the first time. Attending the congress will bring new experiences for most of the Buddyz. The programme will be filled with fun activities and exciting skills building sessions.
Clubs that will be invited to attend are those that would have achieved the most points as guided by our grading system, (Diamond, Platinum Plus, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze) and will be representative of all nine provinces.
Soul Buddyz is an edutainment project and co-production between SCI and SABC Education. The project includes a television series as well as print material for grade 7 school learners and their parents. The Soul Buddyz project which is aimed at eight to 14 year olds, arose out of the urgent need to address the health challenges facing children in this country, and to prepare them for adulthood. Soul Buddyz aims to highlight the realities of children who face health and social ills that undermine their well-being and potential.
Furthermore, it highlights the ability of children to jointly confront and manage problematic situations in order to make a difference in their communities. It has become the sounding board for many South African children, speaking to issues of child sexual abuse, disabilities, road safety and HIV and AIDS, as perceived by children. In its sixth series, Soul Buddyz dealt with alcohol abuse and its affect on children, as part of SCI’s Phuza Wize Campaign.
