Gauteng youth choir to represent South Africa in Austria

The Ekurhuleni based Mayibuy' ISakhile Youth Development Choir will compete with the best choirs in the world at the International Youth Choir Festival, to be held in Vienna, Austria from 7th to 15th July 2012.

Gauteng MEC Lebogang Maile will bid the 40 member group farewell at a function to be held at the Heidelberg Civic Centre on Friday.

The choir, which was founded in 2005, is regarded as one of the most exciting and talented groups to emerge from the Sivum'ingoma Chorale Music programme organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR) in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education.

It came through regional qualifications before participating in the Provincial Music Festival staged in October 2011, where it was judged the overall winner for achieving top marks in three different categories.

“After placing the programme on hold in 2007, Sivumingoma was reintroduced in 2011 as a Hub programme decentralising it to get more participants involved. As such there are 51 sites (HUBS) around Gauteng at which the programme will be carried out”.

“We want to produce more products like the Soweto Gospel Choir which continues to showcase the abundant musical talent South Africa  and believe that we can achieve this through the Sivu’mingoma programme, says Lebogang Maile, MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.
