Gauteng Speakers collaborate to improve Government's accountability

The Speakers of Municipal Councils and the Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature will tomorrow, 29 May 2012, sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a view of working together to hold government accountable for service delivery and to improve public participation in the local and provincial legislatures.

The MOU commits the Speakers to set up provincial frameworks for oversight, public participation and law making.

The Speakers will also adopt a five year strategic plan which will amongst others provide for the following:

  • reducing violent service delivery protests in Gauteng through meaningful public participation
  • improving public finance management in municipalities and working towards the clean audit in the province by 2014 and
  • effective implementation of by-laws in the province and working towards standard by-laws across all municipalities.

Members of the media are welcome to attend the opening session on the 29 May 2012 at 18h00.
