Gauteng schools cross country

The Gauteng Schools Cross Country Championship will be held at the Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort on Saturday, 1 September 2012. Athletes will run in the colours of the 15 Education Districts : Gauteng North, Gauteng West, Tshwane North, Tshwane South, Tshwane West, Ekurhuleni South, Ekurhuleni North, Gauteng East, Sedibeng East, Sedibeng West, Johannesburg East, Johannesburg North, Johannesburg West, Johannesburg South and Johannesburg Central.

Some of the athletes to look out for are:

  • Ikageng Gaorekwe Boys 15: Vorentoe - Johannesburg North
  • Lizerie Ferreira Girls 16: Riebeeckrand - Gauteng West
  • Monique Stander Girls 17: Kempton Park - Ekurhuleni North
  • Blessed Ncube Boys 19: Lavela - Johannesburg Central

Ages 9 - 13 years will cater for Primary Schools, whilst the Secondary age group will be from 14 - 19 years. Cross Country is very popular at school level, it promotes mass participation. Approximately 1 800 learners will be afforded an opportunity to showcase their natural talents.

Athletics remains the bedrock of sport development.

The Local Organising Committee has been established to ensure that the event is a resounding success. The event will be hosted by Johannesburg South District. The event is being organised by the Gauteng Department of Education, Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Gauteng Schools Athletics Committee and Central Gauteng Athletics.

Athletes will be selected to represent Team Gauteng at the South African Schools Cross Country Championship to be held at Olympia Park Stadium, Rustenburg - North West Province on 28/29 September 2012.

Gauteng will go all out to defend its " champions title ".
