The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) will be hosting the 43rd Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region under the theme: “Strengthening Legislative oversight to improve accountability, deepen democracy and consolidate growth and development in Africa”.
The CPA takes place two years after Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature hosted the 41st CPA Africa Region Conference and one year before National Parliament hosts the 59th CPA International Conference in 2013.
The CPA was established by the Commonwealth Parliamentarians with the purpose of promoting knowledge of the constitutional, legislative, economic, social and cultural aspects of parliamentary democracy, with particular reference to the Commonwealth of Nations.
The 43rd CPA Africa Region Conference will be held as follows:

Venue: Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg
Ends: Sunday, 8 July 2012
The President of the Republic of South Africa H.E. Jacob Zuma will officially open the Conference on 3 July.
The following are some of the topics to be discussed at the conference:
- Enhancing Democracy and Accountability through Effective Oversight.
- The Role of Parliaments in Eliminating and Reducing Maternal Mortality and Mobility through the Empowerment of Women.
- The challenge of Parliaments in Safeguarding the National Development Interest in an Atmosphere where the Executive plays a Dominate Role.
- Building Partnership to Address the Scourge of Terrorism and Piracy in the Region.
Delegates will be coming from the following African Branches:Botswana, Cameroon, and The Gambia’, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria (29 Sub-National Branches), Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, and South African (9 Sub National Branches), Swaziland, Tanzania and Sub National Branch (Zanzibar), Uganda, and Zambia.
