Gauteng Premier, Minister Ndebele meets over tolling Scheme

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane will tomorrow, 22 February 2011 meet the national Minister of Transport, Sibusiso Ndebele to discuss the implementation of the tolling system in the province. The Premier will be accompanied by MEC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi.

In her State of the Province Address today, Premier Mokonyane expressed the provincial government’s concern about the implementation of the tolling strategy in Gauteng. 

“As government, we are not opposed to the idea of tolling as a cost recovery mechanism.  However, we are concerned at the manner it is to be implemented, including the pricing and its impact on the economy of our province,” said Premier Mokonyane.

In the light of these developments the meeting has been scheduled between the Gauteng Provincial Government and the Minister of Transport to explore alternative options in the best interests of commuters and the state.
