Gauteng Premier launches provincial Magnificent Friday campaign

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, accompanied by MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile, will lead a delegation of the provincial Cabinet during the launch of the provincial Magnificent Friday campaign, on 18 February in Tembisa.

This campaign, which is led by Sports and Recreation South Africa and the national Department of Arts and Culture, is aimed at mobilising communities to rally behind our national teams participating in world cup events and championships during the year by wearing green and gold on Magnificent Fridays and flying the South Africa flag high. These are the dates for Cricket World Cup from 19 March to 2 April, the Netball World Cup from 3 to 10 July and the Rugby World Cup from 9 September to 23 October.

The campaign is also building up on the excitement of the 'Football Fridays', an initiative which was rolled out during the FIFA’s 2010 World Cup.

“It was through initiatives such as Football Fridays that the diverse communities in South Africa got united in support of the soccer national team last year. We want to do it again with the national sport teams participating in major world events this year by collectively supporting our teams as they take on the world to show that we are indeed an exceptional sport-loving nation,” said MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in Gauteng, Lebogang Maile.

The provincial launch event will be marked by a range of activities including, an early morning blitzing at the Tembisa’s Sangweni taxi rank, action cricket, cricket coaching clinics, cultural performances by local and top South African artists. Gauteng will be rolling out this campaign in various regions following the launch to create the hype and community support for our national teams.

Details of the launch are as follows:
Date: Friday, 18 February 2011
Time: 13h00
Venue: Tembisa Plaza, Tembisa
