Gauteng Premier adds value to the Magaliesburg community

Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane together with Education MEC Barbara Creecy will have a consultative meeting with the community of Magaliesburg on Saturday, 24 April 2010, which will discuss the ways of offering better learning conditions and promoting excellence around the area.

Intentions of putting in place various structures enabling learners from farms and rural areas to be accommodated in establishments far away from their parents and homes by the Gauteng Department of Education will also form part of the agenda.

The initiative aimed at providing hostel accommodation to farm and rural learners were included in Premier Mokonyane's State of the Province Address. The premier made a commitment to build a hostel facility in Magaliesburg which will cater for learners coming from rural areas.

"We are going to pay special attention to improving school infrastructure and making sure that the school environment is conducive to learning. All our schools, including those in rural areas, must have basic services," said Mokonyane.

The main objectives of the project will include:

* Providing hostel facilities for learners in the Magaliesburg area as part of learner support programme, in a personal, social and educational sense
* Promoting access to quality education for learners in rural communities and those from poor socio-economic conditions
* Providing learners who will be living away from home for the first time with support in areas such as health practices, time management, appropriate social experiences and educational programme.
