Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, and Health and Social Development MEC, Ntombi Mekgwe, will tomorrow officially launch the Dignity Packs Project for needy girls at Zuurbekom in West Rand.
This is in response to the announcement by President, Jacob Zuma, in his State of the Nation Address that government would provide sanitary towels to young girls residing in poor households. The initiative forms part of the broader government strategy on the War on Poverty, which is intended to benefit poor households.
The aim of the project is to restore the dignity of schoolgirls who have poor school attendance and low self-esteem as a result of the lack of financial resources, essential for affordable basic toiletries and sanitary towels.
The project also look discourages girls from relying on relationships with older men that leads to social problems such as unwanted pregnancies, drug and alcohol abuse.
