The Gauteng Legislature hosts its Sector Parliament for Senior Citizens

The Chairperson of the Health and Social Development Portfolio Committee, Honourable Molebatsi Bopape, invites you to its annual Sector Parliament for Citizens on 19 October 2011.

The Provincial Legislature (GPL) will under the theme “Celebrating the legacy of freedom through strengthening the link between parliament and the people”host a Sector Parliament for Senior Citizens as part of its oversight, law-making and public participation mandate as prescribed by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

The Senior Citizens Parliament will sit as follows:

The Sector Parliament aims to empower Senior Citizens to have a say in matters of governance as stipulated in the Older Persons Act (Act 13 of 2006).It is also an opportunity to embrace the Senior Citizen’s role in all political, social, economic and cultural matters of society. Furthermore:

  • To encourage Senior Citizensto take part in decision-making and legislative processes, which directly affect them;
  • To profile the GPL’s mandate on law-making, oversight public participation and cooperative governance;
  • To strengthen relations between the GPL and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that represent the interests of Senior Citizens; and
  • To promote and intensify health and social awareness programmes such as; cancer awareness, medical care and; social issues such as day care centers for the elderly and old age homes etc.

The GPL plays a critical role in ensuring that issues affecting Senior Citizens are addressed through the Portfolio Committee on Health and Social Development. This Committee has a mandate to make laws, encourage public participation in its Programmes as well as conduct oversight on the Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development.
