For five weeks starting from 23 October to 27 November, the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA) will host the "Diski 5 GP" five-aside tournaments in various parts of the province.
The programme will unfold as a series of regional events and the finals will take place in Tshwane on Saturday, 27 November 2010. The initiative, targeting the under 13 and 17s, is part of the department's programme to develop youngsters with proper football skills, playing techniques. The programme is also aimed at improving coaching skills and techniques for football coaches.
This programme aims at breaching the gap and encouraging participation within the junior age groups (boys and girls). A total of 128 community based clubs affiliated to SAFA will be participating in the tournament which will be played at selected stadiums and sport centers.
"Working closely with SAFA, It is also our hope that through this programme we will identify talented young people who will go on to benefit from the department's sports development programme," says Nelisiwe Moerane, Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts Culture and Recreation.
The five-aside concept is based on the "street soccer" style which is well known in the South African soccer circles and its popularity has given birth to many professional players. The tournament will definitely take the "street soccer" culture to the world.
