The Gauteng Department of Health will host two major stakeholder engagements with nurses and the religious sector this weekend.
On Saturday, 19 May, nurses will gather at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital to renew their commitment to the profession as well as the delivery of quality healthcare in the province.
Every year in May nurses commemorate International Nurses Day and this year’s theme is Closing the Gap: From Evidence to Action.
The nurses are seen by society as contributing immensely to health care services in the province. South Africa is considered one of the countries with the best trained and innovative nurses in the world.
During the event, nurses will also reflect on the valuable contribution they make to society and their daily challenges.
On Sunday, 20 May, the Department will join the community in remembering the lives of those who died from HIV and AIDS as well as support those living with HIV and AIDS related illnesses at a candlelight memorial service in Soweto.
The aim of this event is to create awareness around the need for care and support to AIDS patients and the affected families and to inform the community about prevention, treatment, care and support services available for people living with the disease.
Under the theme Promoting Dignity Together, the event will further look at ways to alleviate the stigma of HIV and AIDS and to work towards the pledge of a world without AIDS.
