Gauteng government explores alternative construction methods to build schools

In what is seen as an answer to slow-moving delivery of the much-needed schools in Gauteng, the Provincial Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Independent Development Trust (the IDT).

In terms of the MOU, the IDT will use alternative methods in the construction of schools in Gauteng. Olivenhoutbosch and Lotus Gardens, both located in Tshwane, are the first of the nine areas who will benefit from the alternative method of construction of schools.

To signal the implementation of this project, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, joined by MECs Barbara Creecy (Education) and Bheki Nkosi (Infrastructure Development), will on Thursday, 8 March, officiate in the sod-turning ceremony of the Olivenhoutbosch Primary School.

The alternative method of construction of schools enables the building of a new school within six months, thus drastically improving service delivery timelines and contributing to faster access to places of learning. The method is also environmentally friendly and is in line with the global green objectives of the United Nations that seek to reduce global warming.

Upon its completion, the Olivenhoutbosch Primary School will boast three blocks, with a total of 23 classrooms, a laboratory, computer room, 23 toilets, a paved assembly courtyard and a sports field.

Details for the event are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 8 March 2012
Time: 10h00 to 12h00
Venue: Olivenhoutbosch Ext19 school
