Gauteng Education hosts mini-carnival in honour of Nelson Mandela

On 18 July 2011 the world celebrates international Nelson Mandela Day and the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) invites the public to donate their time over this weekend to the cleaning of schools in the province.

To avoid disruption of learning and teaching on Monday, the GDE has planned a fun-filled day on Saturday, 16 July 2011, where a mini-carnival will weave through the streets of Daveyton on its way to Ekangala Primary School for the main departmental celebrations. The theme is 67 minutes for Madiba: a lifetime for the future of an African Child.

In preparation for the day, primary school learners have developed creative artworks to celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela in education. The artworks were selected through regional competitions and finalists will compete for the first prize on Saturday.

High school learners who won their regional public speaking competitions on the legacy of Nelson Mandela will participate in the finals during the celebrations.

Gauteng Education MEC Ms Barbara Creecy will congratulate all the finalists and hand out prizes.

Each of the 15 Gauteng Education districts have selected at least two schools in their regions where parents are invited to participate in school cleaning campaigns. This will involve removing weeds, cutting the grass and the cleaning of windows and toilets to prepare for the third term of schooling.

Details of the event are as follows:
Date: 16 July 2011
Time: 8h00 to 13h00
Venue: Ekangala Primary School, Daveyton

On Monday, 18 July 2011, learners will hoist the flag at assembly, sing the national anthem and listen to President Jacob Zuma’s message to Nelson Mandela. At 8h05 learners will join in singing “happy birthday” to Nelson Mandela in an attempt to enter into the Guinness Book of World Records.
