Gauteng to celebrate Women’s Day

Gauteng will join the rest of South Africa in celebrating the 55th Anniversary of the Women’s Day at its provincial event to be held at the Union Buildings on Tuesday, 9 August 2011.

Premier Nomvula Mokonyane will take a lead in remembering the over 20 000 women who, in 1956, took it upon themselves to challenge the apartheid system and marched to the Union Buildings.

Following the recent passing of her mentor Mama Albertina Sisulu, the Premier is expected to touch on efforts to maintain the legacy of such women who availed themselves to help other (young) women.

She is also expected to outline the government’s commitment to advance the development of women and reflect on the achievements made.

Please note that media accreditation is now available for collection at the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation at 38 Rissik Street- Corner Market Street in Johannesburg.
