The Free State Province will stage the 2012 provincial Freedom Day celebration, which is the 18th Freedom Day celebration to be staged, under the national theme “Working Together to Promote Unity in Diversity”. This year’s Freedom Day celebration take place at the time when the country is also celebrating the historical moment of the centenary of the African National Congress (ANC). The formation of the ANC on the 8th January 1912 marked an important landmark in the liberation heritage of this country. This year’s Freedom Day celebration therefore serves as an important milestone in this liberation heritage.
It is the considered view of the Free State Provincial Government that the staging of the national Centenary Celebration of the ANC in Mangaung (Free State) on the 8th January 2012, was indicative of the rich history and heritage that this Province has as the Heart of Freedom, amongst other things.
The 2012 Freedom Day celebration will thus build on this strong heritage foundation that has already been laid. The Eastern Free State, with its formidable cultural heritage and geographical landscapes will serve as the setting for this celebration.

The programme of the celebration will be characterised by various activities and service delivery processes which include:
- Exhibitions by various stakeholders;
- Arts and Culture Craft exhibitions and cultural performances;
- Sport and Recreation activities (Indigenous, Elderly and Disability games)
- Social Services provision; and other state institutions/departments;
- Messages from political principals.
The emphasis of the celebrations will continue to be on mass participation and true celebration of the spirit of freedom and democracy.
