Free State Social Development hosts World Population Day Celebration, 24 Jul

The World population Day is an international event celebrated throughout the world every year on the 11th July. It is a day that was set aside by the United Nations population Fund (UNFPA) and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 to be used for raising awareness on population and development issues.

Every year the UNFPA selects a theme that addresses a specific developmental concern. This year‘s theme “Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies” has been chosen to highlight the plight of Women, children and young people who are regarded as victims during crisis situation. The victims (Women and Children) face greater risk of abuse, sexual exploitation, violence, forced marriages, reproductive health related illnesses and eventually death if there is no intervention from government and other social sectors entrusted to protect and advocate for women’s rights.

This year the department will be targeting rural women and women with disabilities from Maluti a Phafung district targeting the following areas in Qwaqwa: Mangaung, Makong, Sebokeng, Namahadi and Ha-sethunya villages. The main purpose of the event is to create awareness and to galvanize global communities on emerging population and development concerns.
