Free State province collaborate to improve child health

The Free State Provincial Government resolved to establish a task team of specialists to address maternal, neonatal and child mortality in the province, as was stated by the Premier in the State of Province Address.

After a situational analysis on neonatal and child health in the province was conducted, this team resolved to advise the MEC for Health and Head of Health to host a Child Health Summit that would form the strategic framework for child health in the province.

The purpose of this summit is to engage all relevant stakeholders in child health. These include community role players, academia, the professionals, the private sector, and stakeholder departments like Education, Social Development, amongst others. The intention is to highlight the challenges that face Child Health and to come up with resolutions on a way forward for the Free State on reversing mortality rates, in line with attainment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Decreasing Maternal and Child mortality is output 2 of the National Service Delivery Agreement of Government to achieve the vision of A Long and Healthy Life for All South Africans.

The summit will also be graced by the presence and attendance of Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, Deputy Minister of Health. Members of the media are invited to interact with the MEC for Health and speakers of the day on the 10  to 11 August 2011, Ilanga Estate, Heuwilsig in Bloemfontein @09h00.
