Free State launches 2010 Schools Football World Cup competition

“Ke Nako, Celebrate Africa’s Humanity”

In a bid to mobilise young people to contribute towards advocacy campaign about the 2010 FIFA World Cup competition, the Free State Department of Education will be the first province to launch “My 2010 School Adventure” campaign on Friday, 12 February at Mangaung Outdoor Sport Centre.

Free State MEC for Education Tate Makgoe will officially launch the campaign at the main game to be played at the Mangaung Outdoor Sport Centre at 14h00. There will be similar inaugural games throughout the province.

This is a collaborative venture that has been initiated and supported by the national Department of Basic Education, Sport and Recreation South Africa, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee.

The project is South African Schools Football World Cup competition. About 500 Free State schools will participate in the project. The schools will adopt one of the 32 countries participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament. Under the theme: “Ke Nako, Celebrate Africa’s Humanity”, the competition has two pillars, namely, a participation pillar, which is about football, and an education pillar which is about arts, culture, educational research and creative writing.

The aim of this initiative is to inter alia:

* increase awareness among learners, educators and the broader school community of the importance of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup
* provide an opportunity to celebrate issues of national identity, heritage and unity in diversity amongst learners, educators and parents
* generate understanding of and commitment of human rights, democracy and non-discrimination amongst learners, educators and parents
* focus attention on broader continental African identity and heritage
* provide an opportunity to celebrate creativity and values of humanity.

The provincial final for both categories will be held between 23 to 24 April. The champions will represent the province at the national competition to be held on 7 and 8 May 2010.
