The Free State Department of Public Works will be hosting the Provincial Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Summit on the 27 and 28 September 2012. EPWP, as one of government’s interventions aimed at addressing poverty and unemployment, seeks to draw a significant number of unemployed South Africans into productive work, providing them with the requisite skills that will ultimately increase their capacity to earn an income.
Acknowledging the pivotal lead role that it has been tasked with in creating jobs, the Department of Public Works, through this EPWP Summit, aims to ensure that all strategic role players in the province are given the necessary support as they endeavor to reach the set EPWP targets, particularly those concerning work opportunities and training.
Various Stakeholders, including District and Local Municipalities, relevant Public Entities and other National and Provincial Government Structures that implement the EPWP will get together under one roof to share ideas and experiences on successes and challenges in the two day sitting. The Summit also aims to create a platform through which the resolutions of the 1st and 2nd Annual Summits held in the last two years are implemented and monitored.
Amongst others, the expected outcomes of the EPWP 2012 Summit are as follows:
- Intensify Service Delivery through labour intensive models of the EPWP Phase 2
- Ensure that all Public bodies, especially those in rural areas, are able to access the incentive grant;
- Explore ways of improving the overall participation of all Rural Municipalities in the community Works Programmes;
- Ensure that full potential of the Non – State Sector is optimally achieved through the participation of CBOs, FBOs and NGOs;
- Increase an understanding of the EPWP across all four sectors of the Program, which includes Infrastructure, Social, Non – State and Environment and Culture Sector as well as possibilities for Enterprise Development.
