Four young deaf artists from Mangaung will form part of the 11th World Deaf Congress to be staged in Durban from 18 to 24 July. These artists, Simon Thapelo, Gladwin Makone and Agnes Zapheza from Thaba Nchu and AC du Toit from Bloemfontein, will receive the support of the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in terms of travel costs, accommodation and meals over the eight days of the congress.
The Department is proud to announce that these young artists have been invited to exhibit their artwork at the 11th World Deaf Congress. This will serve as an opportune moment for them to showcase their talent and thus attract attention from possible sponsorships and various other opportunities.
All four artists are products of the Bartemia School for the Deaf in Thaba Nchu, and one of the artists is currently teaching art at the school.
The Congress will also bring delegates up to speed of the latest developments in the international deaf community as well as human right developments.
The MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr Dan Kgothule, stated that “we are proud of the achievements of these young deaf artists and we wish them well for the congress. Their exhibitions will certainly leave a lasting impression on the delegates, as well as give them an opportunity to showcase their artistic skills, and even sell some of their works”.
