Forty patients get a chance to see again

Tomorrow, Leratong Hospital's Opthalmology department will host the second Nelson Mandela Cataract camp aiming at restoring sight to those blinded by cataract.

This drive which will see 40 people operated on in two days is undertaken in partnership with the Pakistan Community of South Africa and the Islamic Medical Association. Through this cataract camp, the hospital aims to reduce the current cataract backlog which is primarily caused by the shortage of Ophthalmologists.

The patients will be admitted at the hospital on Friday, 2 October 2009 and operations are due to be conducted on Saturday and Sunday. During the opening ceremony the initiative will be introduced and the success of the previous camp will be shared.

A cataract is a painless clouding of the lens of the eye. It develops over a long period of time, gradually worsening the eyesight which eventually leads to blindness.
