Food security a must for Mandela Day

Randfontein: The MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza of the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development together with the Mayor of West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) Councillor Mpho Nawa invites the media to join them as they provide services to Jabulani informal settlement as part of celebrating Nelson Mandela Day.

Amongst the services that will be provided as their contribution in celebrating this day will be:

  • tree planting and food gardens
  • basa njengomagogo clean fire campaign
  • installation of a solar system
  • clean ups

About 80 fruit trees and 70 indigenous trees will be planted in schools and in Jabulani Informal settlement. The community intends to establish an orchard. Seeds and seedlings will be planted to develop food gardens for the community in trying to provide food security in the area.

Two 200 liters solar geysers will be installed in the area of Jabulani Informal Settlement. One solar geyser will be installed in the Nursery and Crèche and one for the community. Project cost will be covered by Gauteng Department of Local Government and Housing and WRDM.
