The fisheries branch of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is hosting an event to consolidate South Africa’s ties with Norway via the Norsa programme. This relationship was initiated by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) providing development assistance to South Africa in 1994. The objective of the NORSA programme was an important instrument in assisting the previous branch of Marine and Coastal Management (now Fisheries branch) to introduce a new regime aimed at transforming the South African fishing industry while also ensuring biological sustainability of the fish resources in the country.
The programme provided a successful framework for co-operation between South Africa and Norway in the fisheries sector. Its main focus areas were to support various projectss such as scientific research projects, aquaculture, resource management activities in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), policy development: e.g. Allocation of medium term rights, staff development and training, and post graduate scholarship.
This event will be celebrating the achievements derived from this engagement as well as highlight and incorporate the new projects into the new mandate of the Fisheries branch and thereby securing future plans for donor funding towards the branch.
