The first municipal ward by-elections after the 2011 municipal elections of 18 May will take place on Wednesday, 7 September 2011 in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed that 17 wards are scheduled for by-elections of which one ward is uncontested. A total of 44 candidates will contest 16 vacant wards of whom three are independent candidates and the rest represents 12 political parties.
In Gauteng, two by-elections will take place:
Ward 21 in Merafong City (Carletonville) Municipality – GT484 will be contested by Johannes Lodewyk Janse Van Rensburg, an independent candidate; Rachel Knox Tavanchi of the African National Congress; Johannes Frederick Jooste of the Democratic Alliance and Abraham Gerhardus Daniel Nel of the Independent Ratepayers Association of South Africa.
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
Ward 78 in Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality – TSH will be contested by Brendon Govender of the African Christian Democratic Party; Thobekile Gloria Maphumulo of the African National Congress; Richard Daryll Botha of the Christian Democratic Party; Peter Sutton of the Democratic Alliance; and Aletta Catharina Nefdt of the Vryheidsfront Plus.
The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.
In KwaZulu-Natal, one by-election will take place. Ward 17 in Umhlabuyalingana (Emangusi) Municipality – KZN271 will be contested by Sbonelo Nhlakanipho Tembe of the African National Congress; and Almon Magwaza of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

In Limpopo, nine by-elections have been scheduled to take place:
Ward 7 in the Greater Giyani (Giyani) Municipality – LIM331 will be contested by Soza Solly Maswanganyi of the African National Congress; and Mercy Rhulani Mashimbye of the Congress of the People.

Ward 28 in the Greater Giyani (Giyani) Municipality – LIM331 which will be contested by Beatrice Maria Khosa of the African National Congress; and Mpungeni Samuel Mlambo of the Congress of the People.

Ward 1 in the Greater Letaba (Duiwelskloof) Municipality – LIM332 which will be contested by Giyani Jonathan Mkansi of the African National Congress; and Ratsekana Joseph Ramahala of the Congress of the People.
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.
Ward 18 in the Greater Letaba (Duiwelskloof) Municipality – LIM332 which will be contested by Refilwe Eddyson Sekhonoane of the African National Congress; and Moraka Patrick Mathedimosa of the Congress of the People.

Ward 24 in the Greater Letaba (Duiwelskloof) Municipality – LIM332 which will be contested by Ngwako Selowa of the African National Congress; Khorombe Willington Machethe of the Congress of the People; and Mathole Ezekiel Mohale of the United Democratic Movement.

Ward 33 in the Greater Tzaneen (Tzaneen) Municipality – LIM333 which will be contested by Dimakatso Thomas Maake of the African National Congress; Matoke Alberts Peu, African Peoples’ Convention; and Sekororo Joseph Mametja of the Congress of the People.

Ward 10 in Ba-Phalaborwa (Phalaborwa) Municipality – LIM334 is uncontested. Baselekile Ryphie Mashale of the African National Congress is the only candidate.

Ward 10 in Makhuduthamaga (Ngwaritsi) Municipality – LIM473 which will be contested by Mantile Judy Mphelane of the African National Congress; Chipane Frank Makweng of the Congress of the People; and Kgapane Kubyana of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

Ward 17 in the Greater Tubatse (Burgersfort/Ohrigstad/Eastern Tubatse) Municipality – LIM475 which will be contested by Rungwane Victoria Tjatji and Thathishi Wilson Selala, both independent candidates; Ngwakwane Dorah Mphethi of the African National Congress; and Nkanloleng William Mametsa of the Congress of the People.

Three by-elections have been scheduled for Mpumalanga in Thembisile [KwaMhlanga] Municipality – MP315. They are:
Ward 13 which will be contested by Aaron Bhinga Khumalo of the African National Congress; and Jabulani Phillemon Masombuka of the Sindawonye Progressive Party.

Two by-elections will take place in the Western Cape:
Ward 6 in Cederberg (Citrusdal) Municipality – WC012 will be contested by William Abels of the African National Congress; Hernice Phillip Heyns of the Democratic Alliance; and Ebenezer Cecil Wayne Van Schalkwyk of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

Ward 1 in Beaufort West (Beaufort West) Municipality – WC053 will be contested by Latitia Deyce of the African National Congress; Samuel Mbulelo Ngqokelane of the Congress of the People; and Adam Alexander Nieuwenhuizen of the Democratic Alliance.

Voting stations will be open from 7h00 to 21h00. A total of 74 678 voters are registered in the 17 wards and 75 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
