Film and Publication Board (FPB) preaches cyber safety in Western Cape schools

The Film and Publication Board (FPB) will embark on a provincial awareness campaign in secondary schools in the Western Cape to promote internet safety in the fight against child pornography, from 8 to 9 February 2010.

On 8 February, the campaign will be at New-Eisbein Secondary (08h15) at Inyanga East for an hour and commence at Mountainview Secondary (12h15) at Hanover Park. On 9 February the first visit will be at Lavender Hill Secondary (08h15) at Lavender Hill and end at Cathkin Secondary (12h15) at Bonteheuwel.

The campaign, to be championed by one of the FPB ambassadors, Meschak Mavuso, popularly known as ‘VUSI’ from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) three, Isidingo series, will talk to the possible risks and dangers faced by South African children via chat rooms on internet and cell phones.

As the country gears up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer games, it is in the interest of all communities to ensure that children are aware of possible child exploiters who are also likely to target the country either physically or online.

As techno savvy groups within the South African communities, children also need to know that the creation, distribution, exhibition and possession of child pornography or pornographic images through MMS and chat rooms are unlawful and punishable according to the Films and Publications Act.
