Fight against drug and substance abuse intensified

Limpopo MEC for Health and Social Development, Mme Dikeledi Magadzi will on Sunday, 26 June lead a campaign in the fight against drug and substance abuse as part of the International Day Against Substance Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking.

During the meeting with community members and stakeholders, MEC Magadzi will deliver a keynote address.

It is expected that the MEC will address issues relating to access and demand reduction of drugs, dangers of drug, alcohol and substance abuse and its impact on the development and the social outlook of society in terms of the provision of Prevention and treatment of Drug Dependency Act, 20 of 1992.

"The abuse of drug, alcohol and substances has a negative impact to the fabric of our society; we therefore need to do something urgently before our people become addicts. We need to act against it with the same vigor we employed during the liberation struggle," Magadzi said.

Magadzi has also urged members of the community, particularly young people to stay far from drugs saying "it's not cool to do drugs".
