Ficksburg celebrates R37 million new school grand opening

Community of Meqheleng in Ficksburg will on Tuesday, 8 December 2009 celebrate the grand opening of the R37 million new Mehopung Primary School. This is part of the Free State Department of Education ‘design and build programme’ which seek to eliminate the platoon schooling system in the province. The R585 million ‘design and build programme’ which include the construction of the 11 brand new schools and extensive upgrading of four existing schools is the biggest in the country.

Mehopung Primary School will be the first of 11 of schools to be completed within a record of 13 months. The project started in September 2008 and was completed in October 2009. About 500 temporally jobs were created during the construction of the school.

More than 1 000 learners who were previously platooning at the adjacent Masaleng Primary School will be benefit from this new school. The school’s facilities include 26 classrooms, administration block, media centre and school hall, storeroom facilities for all classrooms as well as requisite earthworks and steel pallasade fence.

Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe will officially open the school at the celebration on Tuesday morning. More than 2 000 people including the Mayor of Setsoto Municipality and many people associated with the school and local community will attend the official opening.
