The Department of Social Development and Special Programmes will on Friday, 18 March 2011, handover furniture to 10 households in Tarkastad, Chris Hani Municipality.
The Honourable MEC Pemmy Majodina requested assistance from the national public works department to assist with furniture for poor families and families who were affected by severe weather conditions. The need for furniture in these households (Tarkastad) was identified by the Honourable MEC Pemmy Majodina during the back to school campaign in the area.
The department has been assigned a responsibility to render care and support services to families, and to promote moral values and social cohesion. Recently, the department handed over furniture to six households in the Nelson Mandela Metro and to an old age home in Sterkspruit during the International Women’s Day. Adequate housing is a fundamental human right.
The right to housing has particular significance for children. Because of their vulnerability they have special needs for care and protection. The important role of the family in promoting moral values cannot be over emphasised .This gesture therefore by the department is to restore dignity to these households and turn houses into homes.
