Experts confer on the integration of indigenous knowledge systems into mainstream curricula

The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will deliver a keynote address at the 3rd International Conference on Science and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), to be held from 25 to 28 October 2011 at the University of Western Cape's School of Public Health.

This conference is a very important step in placing IKS firmly on the country's education agenda. The conference will explore the following critical areas:

  • Gathering IKS data from communities, through working with community experts and artisans, using video and audio recording, pictures and interviews on the processes and products of IKS in different communities in South Africa.
  • Developing a website and database for cataloguing and archiving these materials in such away as to make them accessible to project participants throughout the country.
  • Establishing curriculum material production teams in participating institutions, involving teachers and other interested practitioners.
  • Devolving training in the use of the teaching materials produced by these teams to trainee and in-service teachers to ensure that the educators we produce are not only competent science, mathematics and technology teachers, but sensitive to protecting the legacy of community intellectual property and able to make learners proud of their IKS legacies.

All media are invited to attend.
