Economic Development Committee scrutinises economic projects

The Portfolio Committee on Economic Development will this week, 19 to 22 June 2012 conduct an oversight visit to the Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

The purpose of the visit is to assess whether decent jobs are being created through the large economic projects, and that these projects are completed on time.

The Committee will also ensure that Economic Development Departments in these four provinces have economic projects that are aligned with the National Growth Path (NGP), the Industrial Policy Action Plan 2 (IPAP2). In addition, the committee will establish alignment of these economic projects with provincial governments’ plans as well and with policies of these departments.

The committee would also carry out site visits on the following projects:

  • Development of a commercial malt production plant in Kimberly on the banks of the Modder and Riets rivers project (Northern Cape)
  • New national fibre-optic network (KwaZulu-Natal)
  • Transnet’s new multiproduct pipeline (NMPP) Project (Gauteng)
  • The Maputo Development Corridor Project (Mpumalanga)
