Members of the media are invited to the Greening and Resource Efficiency road shows aimed at educating tourism product owners on the importance of using available natural resources (water and energy) optimally and efficiently in their sector. The road shows take place in Port Elizabeth and East London on 13 to 14 February 2012 respectively.
Responsible tourism is a growing global trend which offers opportunities to develop tourism products that can contribute to national socio-economic objectives by providing livelihoods for local economies whilst giving value to the maintenance of local heritage, culture and traditions. It also generates revenues for environmental conservation and management. Resource efficiency as a component of responsible tourism is the first step to improving business sustainability and greening the tourism sector.
In light of the above the National Department of Tourism (NDT) in partnership with the Departments of Environmental Affairs (DEA), Water Affairs (DWA), Eskom and NAA-SA are conducting the road shows on 'Greening and Resource Efficiency' to engage the tourism industry on the importance and benefits of implementing responsible tourism practices in their businesses.
Topics to be discussed include Universal Accessibility in Tourism, Tourism Climate Change, and Energy Efficiency in Tourism plus funding mechanisms, Sustainable Development and Greening, Water Conservation and Demand Management, and the National Minimum Standard for Responsible Tourism.
