Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature to participate in activities aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning during Mandela Day

The Legislature extends an invitation to esteemed members of the media to attend and cover its Nelson Mandela Day activities scheduled as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 18 July 2012
Time: 8h00
Venue: Healdtown Comprehensive High School, Fort Beaufort

On 18 July 2012, the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, sponsors and the local community shall roll up their sleeves to participate in activities aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning at Healdtown Comprehensive High School in Fort Beaufort.

Recognised as a historical site, the school is under-resourced with its condition deteriorating. The Legislature as inspired by the Nelson Mandela Day objectives has identified the school as its 2012 project and shall refurbish the dilapidated buildings to help resuscitate the school to its former glory. It is against this background that the Legislature mobilised sponsors, government departments and the local community to join hands to effect renovations at the school, where the former South African President, the world most celebrated icon, Dr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela studied.

In appreciating the role Dr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela played in our country, the Legislature community shall dedicate 67 minutes in community service revamping Healdtown Comprehensive High School. Several sponsors have pledged donations some in the form of library material, labour and equipment’s to set up a computer room.

Renovations at the school are at an advance stage with the project fully funded by the Legislature. A fully-fledged library shall be handed over to the school on 18 July 2012 with more work to unfold towards the establishment of an Educational Resource Centre.
