As part of the October Transport Month Campaign, the Eastern Cape MEC for Transport Thandiswa Marawu will officially open 18 post office sites for registration of vehicles at Aliwal North on 18 October 2012.
This occasion is yet another fulfillment of a promise made by MEC Marawu during her 2012/13 policy speech presentation in March 2012. This happens exactly a week after the MEC officially opened the Gelvandale and Newton Park post offices’ vehicle licensing and registration services in Port Elizabeth.
“Eighteen Post Offices will be rolled out in the Midlands area of the province during the second half of the financial year and the following towns are earmarked:Jansenville, Willowmore, Tarkastad, Blikana, Dukathole, Herschel, Jamestown, Venterstad, Hofmeyer, Michuasdal, Lingelihle, Sterkstroom, Steynsburg, Bedford, Balfour, Keiskammahoek, Aberdeen, Siphiwo Mazwayi (Grahamstown).
The aim is to assist the motor manufactures, motor dealers, importers and builders. And in time, it is also hoped that the service will be available at every Post Office in the province”, said Marawu.
Over the last three years, 1,5 million transactions have been done at 102 branches offering this facility in the Eastern Cape.
The registration and renewal process works through a secure, real-time link to the National Transport Information System (e-NaTIS). Each Post Office point-of-sale terminal will provide a valid disc and Post Office receipt against payment and motorists must produce a printed renewal notice to renew a motor vehicle licence.
All post offices are open on Saturday mornings and many on a Sunday, which gives motorists more convenient times to renew their vehicle licences.
A registering authority is an authority which has a mandate of:
(1)Issuing of duplicate registration certificates
(2)Processing of applications for the reduction of tare weight on new trucks
(3)Registering and de-registration, as well as licensing of motor vehicles
(4)Processing of applications for the introduction of motor vehicles.
