The MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, Zoleka Capa cordially invites members of the media to join her as she visits JJR Jolobe High School in Port Elizabeth in a bid to revive agriculture in the schools.
The department has partnered with Mhlobo Wenene’s Khanya Gqiyazana midday show, which will donate school uniform and other study materials.
JJR Jolobe is part of the eight schools, which were adopted by the MEC on her capacity as the Member of Parliament (MPL), which have been given rakes, spades, hoes, water tanks, watering cans, wheelbarrows as well as seeds and seedlings while there will be dedicated extension officers coaching both the pupils and learners.
The MEC has already visited Nceba High School in Ntabankulu where she also targeted Ntabankulu High School, Mfundisweni High School and Gwebindlala High School all in Ntababankulu and Tylden School in Mount Frere.
The MEC is upbeat about the need of having each and every school in the Province to be involved in food security as part of the Zero Hunger campaign, which aims to ensure every arable land, be it in school or church land, is cultivated.
The ultimate objective of this exercise it to have schools become part of the school nutrition programme and the agriculture science to become one of the careers of choice. The department has made great strides in quest to revive agriculture science in schools and several teachers are trained.
To sustain food security in the Province, education and training of food production should start at the school level and educators should be equipped with the practical and latest developments in the sector.
The department is also engaged in agricultural science road shows and summits in the Province to engage pupils and successful 4-H Clubs initiatives, which encourage and help schools to form their own gardens has also instilled the passion of pupils in the subject.
The MEC will visit and distribute the material on 1 February 2012 in Motherwell Township.
