MEC Capa started her Zero Hunger Campaign in schools in January, where she handed-over garden tools that comprised of spades, forks, hoes and wheelbarrows.
The department has partnered with Mhlobo Wenene’s Khanya Gqiyazana midday show, which will donate school shoes to 250 destitute school kids that attend Bonkolo, Mhlontlo and Lukhanji schools in the Queenstown areas.
The MEC has so far delivered the tools to schools in the Nelson Mandela Metro, OR Tambo and Alfred districts after she adopted eight schools as a MPL and these schools will have dedicated extension officers coaching both the pupils and learners.
The department is in a bid to have each and every school in the province to be involved in food security as part of its Zero Hunger campaign, which aims to ensure every arable land is cultivated.
The ultimate aim of this exercise is to have schools become part of the school nutrition programme and the agriculture science to become one of the careers of choice.
The department has made great strides in quest to revive agriculture science in schools and several teachers are continuously being trained in other to benefit them with close knowledge of the subject and close the gaps that are experienced currently, like lack of practical knowhow among the teachers.
The department is also engaged in agricultural science road shows and summits in the province to engage pupils and successful 4-H Clubs initiatives, which encourage and help schools to form their own gardens has also instilled the passion of pupils in the subject.
