The Eastern Cape provincial government, civil society, labour unions, business and other stakeholders will converge at the Education Leadership Institute in East London tomorrow, 26 March 2010 to talk about achievements and bottlenecks on service delivery.
MEC for Education Mr Mahlubandile Qwase as Political Champion of the African Peer Review Mechanism in the province will address the session.
In March 2003, South Africa acceded to the APRM, thereby subjecting the country to a review by African peers on the following thematic areas:
* democracy and political governance
* economic development and management
* corporate governance and
* socio-economic development
The provincial APRM session will provide a platform to all the stakeholders in the province to engage on the above mentioned thematic areas. The inputs and resolutions from the Provincial APRM session will be consolidated into the national APRM report that will be tabled to the African Union Heads of State Summit later this year.
Purpose of the APRM
The purpose of APRM is to encourage the governments of Africa to adopt policies, standards and practices that lead to greater stability, economic growth and sustainable development.
Members of the media will be afforded an opportunity at 13h00 to conduct interviews.
