Eastern Cape Government to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day

The Eastern Cape Government will on Thursday, 9 December 2010 join the rest of the world in commemorating the International Anti-Corruption Day. The event will be held at the King Williams Town War Memorial and will start at 09h00. Premier Kiviet is expected to deliver a key note address at the event.

On 31 October 2003, the United Nations Convention against Corruption within the United Nations Assembly, declared the 9th day of December each year to be the World International Anti-Corruption Day.The first annual International Anti-Corruption Day was conducted in Merida, Mexico on 9 December 2004.

Since then each year it is convened to convey a message of a fight against corruption with full potential around the world.

The Anti-Corruption Unit in the Office of the Premier has invited ordinary citizens from various communities, business people, ex-prisoners, service providers and civil servants to add a provincial voice and participate in this global campaign to combat corruption. The campaign is a preventative measure against corruption which is in line with the Provincial Anti-Corruption Action Plan.

It is a tool to bring awareness on corruption to different communities. Communities need to realise that Corruption is a serious crime that can undermine social and economic development in all societies. No country, region or community is immune to corruption.

The fight against corruption is not winnable without the involvement of communities hence we need to take this initiative to schools, prisons, hospitals and the streets of our province to invite them to report corruption and not stand back and regard it as a government problem.
