Eastern Cape Department of Transport to host provincial South African Network for Women in Transportation (SANWIT) conference

As part of its Women’s Month programme, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport will host a South African Network for Women in Transportation (SANWIT) Provincial Conference at the OR Tambo Hall in Mthatha on 30 to 31 August 2012 at 9h00.

This two day conference is a culmination of District SANWIT Summits that took place earlier this year to revive the structure at both district and provincial levels, following a pronouncement made by Transport, Roads and Public Works MEC Thandiswa Marawu through the policy speech in March 2012.

The establishment of SANWIT was a reaction to the fact that women entrepreneurs within the transport sector continuously face a wide array of obstacles and barriers in their business operations. The SANWIT concept promotes collaboration and coalition building among women entrepreneurs for policy advocacy and action, which recognises and support women's contribution in transportation development while affording women outstanding networking opportunities and inside exposure in the country’s latest transportation mega projects.

It is a structure that supports the idea of strengthening the role of women in transport and is aimed at recruiting women or women groups as members and coordinate them into an umbrella body.
