The national Department of Education’s Deputy Director-General, Ms Gugu Ndebele and the Eastern Cape Education MEC Mahlubandile Qwase will be launching the Safe Schools programme on 15 February at the Lingelethu High School, near East London at 11h30.
This launch is an attempt to uproot violence in this school as it was identified to have huge number of learners affected by violence, teenage pregnancy, behavioural disorders and drug abuse. The school will also receive attention from the department through campaigns which will assist in issues such as the restoration of dignity and moral regeneration during the course of this year.
Despite this launch, the department will also be receiving the Torch of Peace from Ndebele as a symbol of forging ahead with the creation of safer schools provincially.
