Eastern Cape province will on Wednesday, 13 to Thursday, 14 October 2010 commemorate International Day of Older Persons at Christian Centre, Abbotsford in East London.
The programme will start at 18h00 on Wednesday, 13 October 2010 and at 09h00 on 14 October 2010. The theme for the event is: "Older Persons and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals".
More than 300 people who include older persons from the 6 district municipalities and the metro, political principals including Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet and Social Development MEC Nonkosi Mvana, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs), business sector and other relevant stakeholders have been invited to attend the occasion.
The commemoration will take the form of a dialogue on older persons policy issues as well as a provincial summit with the main objective being to provide inputs into the draft provincial older persons policy.
The four priority areas of the policy are: health, crime and protection issues, economic empowerment of older persons and older persons participation in older persons structures and other relevant decision making forums.
