Special advisor to Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant, Herbert Mkhize is to deliver a key address at a tripartite stakeholder workshop on, “Building Modern and Effective Labour Administration and Inspection Systems in South Africa”.
The two-day workshop, to be held at Kopanong Conference Centre in Benoni starting tomorrow 9 February 2012, will also be graced by the presence of the Department of Labour’s (DoL) Director-General, who will close the workshop with a keynote address.
Speakers at the high profile gathering will also include Department of Labour Deputy Director-General of Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) Siyanda Nxawe and DoL Occupation Health and Safety (OHS) Chief Director Thobile Lamati.
There will be a paper presented by the International Labour Organisation to provide an international perspective on international experience on partnership between Labour Inspection Services for effective compliance with labour laws.
The gist of the workshop will focus on various subjects in regard to: How far are we as a country? Presentation by Social Partners/ Stakeholders on importance and need for social dialogue in labour inspections and sharing of information on the issues, trends in labour inspection and the role of bargaining councils in the labour inspections. The workshop will conclude with a way forward programme of action.
There will also be comments from the Department of Public Works; the Department of Trade and Industry; local municipalities; Department of Mineral Resources; the South African Revenue Service; Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration and; also the DoL’s public entities the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Commission.
While business will be represented by Business Unity South Africa, the workers will be represented by various federations such as Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), National Council of Trade Unions (Nactu) and Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa).
