Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini will outline the process of re-registering all social grants beneficiaries as part of government’s efforts to eliminate fraud and corruption in the system.
She will give a detailed account on how the process will unfold as well as the approach it will take. Since the Minister made this announcement on Tuesday, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been inundated with calls from members of the public who sought clarity on this matter.
Currently, SASSA pays out cash benefits to 15,3 million people through the social assistance programme. The Department of Social Development reiterates its commitment to the fight against fraud and corruption. It is for this reason that we believe the re-registration process will help us get rid of people who might be benefiting from the social grants system illegally.
A media briefing on this matter will be held as follows:
Date: Friday, 17 February 2012
Time: 11h00
Venue: Southern Sun Hotel, Corner Beatrix and Pretorius Streets, Pretoria (Arcadia)
