Disabled Centre to receive a boost of R1,1 million and 63 wheelchairs

In effort to improve social conditions of people with disability in the North West, MEC for Health and Social Development, Rebecca Kasienyane will hand over a cheque of R1,1 million and 63 wheelchairs to Gontlejang Disabled Club at the launch of the guild on Monday, 16 November 2009.

Dr Ruth Segomotsi District Municipality assisted to kick start the project with financial support to the value of R94 911.16 to procure garden tools, fencing material, water tank, stand erection and installation of irrigation system, erection of shade net for vegetable garden and protective clothing.

Gontlejang Disabled Club, registered non-governmental organisation since 2002 is a community initiated based project for persons with disabilities aimed at assisting persons with disabilities to reach and maintain their optimal physical, sensory, intellectual, psychiatric and social functional levels by providing them with tools for independence.

The project's enterprise includes production of vegetables and chicken broiler to generate income which contributes in the improvement of their socio-economic conditions. The products from the project are sold to local community, Early Child Development (ECD) centres and schools providing feeding schemes to children.

The department is funding 22 disability projects; of the 22 projects, 13 receive monthly grand while nine received once off grand including Gontlejang Disability Club. Statistics South Africa Community Survey for 2007 indicates that the North West province has 139 936 people with disabilities out of a population of 3 271 948.
