Diabetes under the spotlight as Health Minister visits Winterveld

The fight against diabetes in South Africa will receive a major boost when Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and First Lady Madame Bongi Ngema-Zuma visit the community of Winterveld, north of Pretoria tomorrow morning.

Madame Ngema-Zuma has established a Foundation dedicated to fight diabetes in the country and works closely with the Department of Health in this regard.

An estimated 1.5 million people in South Africa live with diabetes about 300 million worldwide. Diabetes and its complications also rank as the third leading cause of deaths amongst South Africans.

The event in Winterveld tomorrow forms part of the World Diabetes Day observed on 14 November annually. The event will be preceded by a four kilometres walk through the streets of Winterveld at 08h00 as part of raising awareness around this "silent killer". There will also be screening and testing for Diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.
